The Executive Director of Foundation and Alumni and Development will provide leadership and direction to develop and implement strategic fundraising initiatives that build donor interest and engagement and increase philanthropic giving to King’s University College.
Reporting to the Vice-President of External Relations, with a dual report to the Foundation Board via the Chair, the incumbent will be responsible for managing a full portfolio of prospects and will be tasked with the responsibility to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts and planned gifts. The Executive Director will lead and manage special fundraising projects, working closely with King’s leadership team. Salary Range: $120,000 – $161,620

Collaboration is important at King’s, and the Executive Director will engage key constituents internally to develop and document priorities for funding, working together to build solicitation strategies and provide coaching and guidance for donor engagement.
Providing oversight and management of systems and processes, the Executive Director will ensure that best practices are implemented and sustained, including the establishment of a tracking system for department-wide delivery against goals.
The Executive Director will also work closely with and support the Alumni Association by providing vision and direction to Alumni Association volunteers and working with the Alumni team on developing and implementing programs to enhance alumni identity and loyalty. The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $161,620 including an excellent benefits package, Group RRSP, and tuition benefits for self and dependents at King’s or any other post-secondary institution in Canada.

ALUMNI & DEVELOPMENT @ KING’S
King’s is proud to have over 24,000 alumni worldwide. Approximately 88% of our alumni live in Canada, primarily in Ontario. We have active alumni Chapters in London, Toronto and Ottawa, and are expanding our Chapter activity to include Hamilton, Calgary, and a few other cities. Our largest international groups of alumni live in China and the USA.
The Alumni & Development team at King’s University College is responsible for fundraising, alumni engagement, and supporting all areas of the College. The Alumni & Development team works closely with the Foundation and the Alumni Association to engage with donors, alumni, corporations, foundations, parents and families of students, as well as local and national community members.
The King’s University College Alumni Association endeavours to increase the level of engagement, and promote lifelong relationships between King’s alumni and their alma mater, to promote a spirit of unity and loyalty to the King’s community; and to preserve the legacy and culture at King’s. The Association seeks to provide a forum for meaningful involvement and interaction among alumni, students, and College leaders.
For instance, the Alumni Office coordinates a variety of social, educational and networking events (in-person and virtual) for alumni, including signature events such as Homecoming and Stratford Theatre with guest speakers. The Alumni Office also manages a student/alumni mentorship program, coordinates the Alumni of Distinction awards, and keeps alumni connected through a selection of communications, including a biannual printed alumni magazine. The mandate of the King’s University College Foundation is to raise support for King’s University College through the deployment of an appropriate mix of fundraising programs and campaigns, prudent management of funds, and thoughtful stewardship of donors’ intentions. On behalf of the Foundation, our Development staff operates Annual Giving and Gift Planning programs, as well as special and capital campaigns. Typically, the team raises about $1M per year, and our goal is to triple this over the next five years with increased activity, resources and staff.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and implement King’s annual and multiyear advancement plans and strategies, ensure the achievement of transformation fundraising goals, and build and enhance alumni engagement to advance King’s strategic and institutional priorities.
- Develop an annual business plan and budget outlining objectives, expenses, resources, employee and volunteer activities.
- Collaborate with senior leadership, faculty, student body and employees throughout the institution on prospect management, goal setting, and strategic planning, to ensure alignment with King’s standards, guidelines, and procedures that protect academic integrity and promote best practices, excellence, and equity in advancement in development and alumni relations.
- Provide exemplary leadership, direction, and mentorship to a team of advancement professionals, and build capacity in major gifts, stewardship, annual leadership giving, and alumni engagement.
- Initiate and direct all activities pertaining to the identification, cultivation and solicitation of gifts from alumni, corporations, foundations and friends of King’s through a diverse mix of short-term and long-term fundraising programs.
- Develop plans for and lead Capital campaign, as needed.
- Source and cultivate gifts from Major donors.
- Provide direction and measurable goals to the Alumni Association and employees including developing and implementing programs to enhance alumni identity and loyalty to King’s.
- Conduct research, gather and maintain data and information to identify and cultivate major donor gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
- Oversee the stewardship of donor relations through appropriate reporting and contact, and scholarship and award events.
- Collaborate with Communications and oversee and approve literature, communications and points of contact related to alumni events and fundraising campaigns including the Herald magazine and social media, as needed.
- Manage ongoing programs to foster and maintain good relations and effective communications with alumni across the cohorts, from current students to senior alumni. This includes Homecoming, regional chapter events and mentoring programs.
- Working with the finance and investment committee of the Foundation to oversee the growth and disbursement of the Foundation’s endowments.
QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
- Outstanding leadership skills, including previous experience managing, coaching, and supporting staff and volunteers.
- A high level of experience in fundraising and development for both annual giving, major giving and capital campaigns.
- Knowledge of fundraising in complex non-profit organizations, experience, whether in education or other complex environments such as healthcare.
- Previous experience in establishing campaign fundraising goals and timelines.
- Knowledgeable in areas of prospect research, gift processing software, online giving strategies, traditional and new media, and other emerging technologies that will optimize outreach to potential donors.
- The ability to make a compelling case to a donor for philanthropic support.
- Superior listening skills and the ability to interpret the concerns and interests of potential stakeholders and translate them into attractive opportunities for investment in King’s development priorities.
- The ability to serve as an articulate representative of King’s with diverse stakeholders and particularly with the sophisticated individuals who support the institution at the major gift level.
- A high level of comfort interacting with academic leaders and faculty (or other subject matter experts, in non-academic environments), as well as with donors and volunteers.
- Demonstrated experience and success managing, motivating, and mentoring senior-level volunteers.
- Exceptional interpersonal abilities, including oral and written communication.
- A high level of maturity, tact and diplomacy.
- Excellent judgement and discretion, particularly concerning confidential matters.
- Strong attention to detail and superb organizational skills.
- Excellent planning & prioritizing to achieve specific goals and deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience establishing and supporting internal systems for meeting deadlines, tracking, follow-up, monitoring and reporting progress.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment with a strong focus on results.
- Experience working within and managing budgets.
- Undergraduate degree, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- A professional qualification (CFRE) in development/fundraising would be an asset but is not a mandatory requirement for this position.
