St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation is seeking a driven and committed Director of Development to expand programs and increase fundraising from a variety of sources, including annual appeals, community engagement, events, and major and planned gifts.
With annual fundraising increasing from $4M to $11M over the last 5 years, and a capital campaign on the horizon, the Director will join SMGHF at an exciting time of growth. Driving strategy for a variety of revenue streams, the Director will develop a monthly giving strategy, enhance the existing grateful patient program and grow the prospect pipeline in new and creative ways. Unique to SMGHF, 74-78% of annual donations are made as major and planned gifts, making this a great opportunity for a fundraiser with knowledge and skills in these key areas.
Reporting to the Vice President, Philanthropy, and leading a team of two direct reports, the Director will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Foundation, to further develop and execute the development strategies focused on continued growth. Applying strong relationship management skills, this position supports the CEO and Vice President, Philanthropy in their major gift work, playing a role to enhance volunteer involvement in pipeline development, and manage their own portfolio of major and planned gift prospects and donors. Key Duties & Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning
- Together with the Vice President, Philanthropy:
- Establish and execute long- and short-term strategic priorities to increase fundraising performance in areas including annual appeals, major and planned giving, community engagement, and events.
- Enhance and build the major gift program to maintain and increase six-figure giving.
- Build out a 3–5-year capital campaign plan.
- Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing Team, on tactics to build SMGHF’s profile both internally and externally for optimal community support, engagement, and awareness.
- Work across the Foundation to develop and implement major giving and planned giving strategies to ensure integration with all fundraising streams.
- Contribute to the development of campaign strategies for current and future campaigns.
- Guide and support the Vice President, Philanthropy and development team members through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship processes and strategies.
Fundraising and Program Management
- Identify, monitor and report on goals and metrics for fundraising programs, initiatives, and staff.
- Manage and solicit a portfolio of $10,000+ major gift prospects.
- Support the Vice President, Philanthropy in enhancing Board member involvement in prospect pipeline development and moves management.
- Provide support, mentoring, coaching and encouragement to development staff.
- Strengthen existing donor relationships while also increasing the donor base by acquiring new supporters and funding from all sources and all levels of giving.
- Accountable for maintaining and ensuring accuracy in the Raisers Edge database.
Leadership and Team Management
- Develop overall fundraising objectives, as well as specific goals for members of the development team with plans to measure and ensure success.
- Collaborate with Foundation program leads to integrate and coordinate programs, maximizing donor engagement and fundraising results.
- Ensure that all fundraising programs and activities fall within ethical, fiscal, and legal standards and organizational policies and regulations.
- Maintain relationships with philanthropy professionals, staying up to date on trends and best practices that support the benchmarking of the organization’s performance.
- Foster collaboration and integration of programs in support of collective goals.
- Develop and implement regular performance management and coaching processes for individuals to track and ensure team success.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Commitment and passion to healthcare philanthropy, the vision of SMGHF and the community we serve.
- Progressively senior fundraising roles with demonstrated success as a fundraising generalist with solid experience in annual appeals, community engagement, events and a focus on major and planned gifts.
- Knowledge and experience with capital campaigns.
- Experience successfully recruiting, inspiring and supporting volunteers in fundraising, and the comfort level and skill to work with philanthropists, community leaders and business executives.
- Exceptional ability to network and build relationships with a variety of diverse audiences.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to connect high-level priorities to practical day-to-day objectives.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with practiced skills to clearly present cases for support and effectively report on the impact of gifts.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across teams, manage multiple projects/timelines and shifting priorities.
- Strong coaching and mentoring skills, with demonstrated ability to manage teams and motivate staff to meet goals.
- Drive and focus to achieve financial targets.
- Commitment to integrity, and a professional donor-centric service approach.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and good judgment, take initiative and respect the confidentiality of sensitive information and materials.
- Detail-oriented, with strong organizational, analytical, and planning skills.
- Deep understanding of the philanthropic sector with a focus on staying informed about emerging trends in the sector.
- Strong technical skills including experience with fundraising database applications (specifically knowledge of Raisers Edge is an asset) and Microsoft Office.
- University degree or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
- Previous experience in a hospital/healthcare fundraising environment is considered an asset.
- Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation or working towards designation is considered an asset.
- Willingness to work outside of regular business hours and travel as necessary.
- A valid drivers license and access to a vehicle are required for this role.
- Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
