Reporting to the Director, Development and Annual Giving, the Senior Development Officer will be instrumental in the planning, development and execution of advancement (fundraising) programs in support of Sheridan’s strategic plan, as well as academic and fundraising priorities. The incumbent will establish strategic partnerships internally and externally to foster a culture of philanthropy and develop strong relationships that inspire giving and donor retention. The Senior Development Officer builds a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors to meet revenue targets and support Sheridan’s Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Pilon School of Business and the Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies, among other Sheridan departments.
• Participating in all aspects of the fundraising cycle - research, prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship;
• Collaborating with Deans, Directors and other internal partners to understand the specific fundraising priorities of Sheridan’s Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Pilon School of Business and Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies and other Sheridan departments;
• Devising ongoing strategies to develop relationships within diverse communities to inspire giving and meet revenue targets;
• Working with appropriate staff regarding subject matter expertise, proposal writing and editing, recognition and stewardship;
• Capturing and recording all relevant relationship and moves management information in Raiser’s Edge;
• Providing senior consultation in the development of strategic directions for the Department and the design of policies and procedures to support those directions;
• Participating in prospect review and strategy meetings to promote a team approach to fundraising;
• Performing other projects and initiatives as required.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
• 3-year degree/diploma in Public Administration, Fundraising, Non-profit Management, Business, Marketing or a related field of study along with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience with a demonstrated track record of closing major gifts and carrying a portfolio of 50+ prospects (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience)
• Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset
• Strong understanding of moves management bringing professional rigor to donor cultivation; building deep pipelines and demonstrating success through metrics
• Proficient in analytics and conducting own research, prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship; someone who is able to ask the right questions, gather and analyze the right data
• Excellent organization, planning and time management skills combined with strong attention to detail and the ability to establish an internal system for meeting deadlines, tracking, follow-up, monitoring, and reporting progress
• Excellent oral and written skills with a demonstrated ability to write effectively and persuasively and present to diverse groups
• Ability to negotiate the closure of major gifts, including the creation of gift agreements and other supporting documentation
• Extremely effective interpersonal skills with a professional presence and manner, and capable of exercising independent judgment, initiative and flexibility
• A high level of comfort working with a wide range of stakeholders, including academic leaders, donors and volunteers
• Excellent public relations and networking skills
• Experience with Raiser’s Edge/NXT is desired
