Reporting to the CEO/ED and a member of the Start2Finish Senior Leadership team, the Director of Fund Development creates and oversees the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising, which will include major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, and in-kind resources. An effective communicator and relationship-builder the Director of Fund Development leads all revenue development activities from planning to implementation and assessment.

Organizational Leadership

o Collaborate with the Board of Directors and CEO to create a fund development plan that increases revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization.

o Foster an understanding and commitment to philanthropy with Start2Finish staff and volunteers.


Role Leadership

o Support the CEO/ED to meet Fund Development Committee requirements, attend Committee meetings as a resource and be responsible for the preparation of Fund Development Committee minutes

o Implement the fund development plans in accordance with ethical fundraising principles.

o Promote Start2Finish to established and potential donors and funders through the development and implementation of a marketing communications plan 

o Implement the fund development plans in accordance with ethical fundraising principles.

o Promote Start2Finish to established and potential donors and funders through the development and implementation of a marketing communications plan. 



o Work with the CEO/ED and Director of Finance to establish the annual Fund Development budget including expenses and revenue targets.

o Collaboration with Senior Leadership team colleagues to ensure fund development directions are aligned with and support the operations, financial and program initiatives.


Day-to-day Fund Development Responsibilities

o Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved and budget targets are achieved.

o Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary.

o Recruit, develop and retain qualified staff to achieve Fund Development revenue, donor, sponsorship and partnership targets.

o Develop policies and procedures for the development department which reflect ethical fundraising practices.

o Guide the preparation and submission of grant applications as identified in the fund development plan

o Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events as specified in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization. 

o Engage volunteers (Board and community) for special fund development projects using established volunteer management practices.

o Develop and manage timelines to ensure critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner including partnership development, prospect development (corporate, community, individual), donor/prospect database management that respects privacy and confidentiality of information, co-ordination of in-kind donations and issuance of charitable receipts.


Characteristics of a Director of Fund Development

o Knowledgeable fundraising professional with a good understanding of the Canada Revenue Agency requirements, privacy and other provincial and federal legislation as well as Canadian Centre for Philanthropy's Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code.

o Able to develop new and unique ways to improve the finances of the organization and to create new opportunities through innovative and creative fundraising activities.

o A relationship-builder able to understand and respond to unique donor and funder needs.

o Should be politically astute, good at setting priorities, and have the ability to deal with multiple tasks and functions simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

o A model of integrity and discipline and have high ethical standards.  

o Commitment to the mission and work of Start2Finish.



o University degree

o A certificate in Fundraising Management an asset

o Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset

o Knowledge of special events planning and management

o Knowledge of the management of volunteer resources

o Skilled in the application of fundraising software and the MS Office Suite

o Five to seven years of fundraising experience
