Habitat for Humanity Niagara has embarked on a new and ambitious five-year strategic direction and is looking for an experienced, energetic and dynamic Development Officer to join our team. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this position is responsible for assisting with the planning and execution of various fundraising activities. The Development Officer will work as part of a team in advancing the work of Habitat Niagara by fostering strong relationships with donors, and generating philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations.

Organization Summary

Habitat Niagara builds decent, and affordable houses, providing no-down-payment, interest-free mortgages to qualifying families who would otherwise not be able to purchase their own homes. Habitat is not a giveaway program in that we provide "a hand up not a hand out.”  Established locally in 1993, Habitat Niagara will be constructing its 65 th home in Niagara by the end of this year, serving 71 families over the past 26 years, creating stable and secure housing for 258 children. Recently, Habitat for Humanity Niagara was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Charities in Canada as captured by MoneySense’s Charity 100. Habitat for Humanity Niagara also operates a home improvement retail outlet – the ReStore – selling donated new and used building materials, hardware, appliances, and home supplies. Habitat for Humanity ReStores play an integral part in Habitat’s mission, providing financial support for our work.
Duties and Responsibilities include:

 Being responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospects over $5,000, including securing donors and sponsors for Habitat Niagara’s Build Day program
 Identifying and researching potential donors to determine suitable cultivation strategy for new donors
 Working independently with donors and prospects, developing proposals for funding and working to achieve fundraising goals
 Establishing and maintaining contacts with a wide variety of community groups, individuals and potential or actual sources of funding
 Ensuring that donors are provided with appropriate recognition and stewardship. Specifically, ensuring that appropriate celebrations, letters, tax receipts, invitations, and other correspondence are sent and or presented in a timely manner
 Managing and coordinating logistics of Habitat Niagara’s Build-Day program
 Recording activity in donor database to report on progress toward achieving gift objectives, maintaining up-to-date and accurate donor and prospect profiles and records of contact
 Overseeing updates of the database with donor information ensuring information is complete and accurate
 Providing regular activity reports to the Chief Development Officer
 Assisting other Habitat staff in accomplishing the resource development objectives of Habitat Niagara

Qualifications & Skills:
 The ideal candidate will have successfully completed post-secondary education with a minimum of three to four years’ related work experience in fundraising and development services or related field
 Experience with donor activities and stewardship of accounts
 Strong interpersonal and public relations skills and the ability to cultivate relationships with and communicate effectively with all donors, volunteers and other stakeholders
 Experience organizing events for both revenue generation and general awareness
 Superior oral, written and persuasive communication skills with the ability to demonstrate creativity and ingenuity in developing solicitation strategies
 Ability to effectively coordinate multiple projects, deadlines and priorities
 CFRE (or working toward) is an asset.
 Proficient in Microsoft Office with good working knowledge of donor database systems
 Able to handle confidential information and attend to a great amount of detail
 Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends to meet the objectives of the position
 Must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a car
