The Grant Writer is a part-time contract role responsible for the researching, preparing and writing of grant funding proposals and applications in order to maintain and build a portfolio of private foundation, corporate foundation, and government agency funders to support the organization’s fundraising goals.



Functional Responsibilities

o Gather information through interviews and other means that will easily allow her/him to grasp the concept of a project or program for which funding is sought, as defined by the person responsible for carrying it out

o Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the organization, and use that knowledge and understanding to better comprehend all projects and programs for which grants will be sought and to recommend the seeking of grants

o Research grant-making organizations and analyze them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs

o Maintain an accurate grants calendar, tracking grant deliverables and timelines

o Develop, write, and edit competitive grant applications in accordance with each grant-making organization’s preferences and following exactly each grant-making organization’s guidelines, exhibiting strong expository writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling 

o Review the budget of a project or program for which funding is sought and make recommendations to better present it to grant-making organizations  

o Maintain communication with Start2finish staff during review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supporting material if applicable



o Bachelor’s Degree and proven track record of successfully securing grants

o At least 5 years of experience in grant writing and related contract management responsibilities

o Excellent writing (verbal and written communication), analytical, and research skills required, including ability to interact successfully with all internal and external partners

o Ability to learn quickly on the job and synthesize complex themes in writing

o Attention to detail; strong organizational, critical thinking and budgeting skills

o Knowledge of philanthropic and government grant guidelines and submission processes

o Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines

o Ability to identify, understand, and articulate program needs and outcomes in collaboration with program staff

o Must be able to handle sensitive, confidential information with discretion and professionalism
